Guided Hikes are offered Monday- Saturday at 10AM May - October. Hikes meet at the Cook-Albert Fuller Nature Center

Join a naturalist for an exploration of The Ridges Sanctuary. We’ll head out on the trails to learn about the history of The Ridges, the unique features of the sanctuary habitats, and what makes the sanctuary the most biologically diverse area in Wisconsin!  

Each month’s guided hike follows a theme focusing on unique aspects of the Sanctuary: 

May: Spring in the Sanctuary 

June: Orchid Observations

July: Swales of the Sanctuary

August: Ridges Pollinators

September: Fall Flowers 

October: The Boreal Forest 

This 90-minute guided hike includes a tour of our Upper Range Light, which has been restored to the period of the last Range Light Keeper. Suitable for all ages.

Night Hike on the Boardwalk!

You are registering for Night Hike on the Boardwalk! Owls, bats, and range lights, oh my! Come explore The Ridges at night! We will learn about the creatures that become active after the sun goes down and check out The Range Lights at work as a navigational aid.

This program will meet outside of The Ridges Sanctuary Cook-Albert Fuller Nature Center (8166 WI-57, Baileys Harbor, WI 54202)*. The Nature Center will remain closed. Please do not bring any flashlights, light up shoes, etc. as we want our eyes to adjust to the dark and to be able to see just as the animals do at night. Ridges staff will provide all hikers with a red flashlight for the duration of the hike. Restrooms are not available on the hike. 

These programs are offered Friday evenings in August starting at 8:00 pm, September starting at 7:00 pm, October starting at 6:00 pm, and November starting at 5:00 pm. Please be sure to check the date for which you are registering. You are always welcome to call if you'd like to register over the phone or learn more about these experiences.

If you are registering for our Wisconsin Bat Wingding Bat Chats Hike, make sure you have the correct date selected! 

This program is suitable for all ages!

Wisconsin Bat Wingding

Curious about Wisconsin's bats? Want to know more about White Nose Syndrome? Join us for the Wisconsin Bat Wingding on Friday, October 18th! Listen to a presentation about Wisconsin's bat populations, followed by our Bat House Building Workshop! 

The Wisconsin Bat Wingding Presentation will start at 2:00pm at the Cook- Albert Fuller Nature Center in Baileys Harbor. The presentation will last an hour and is open to adults and families with children of all ages.

The Bat House Building Workshop* will start at 3:30pm at the Workshop by the Ridges Cabins. The Bat House Building Workshop is suitable for adults and children ages 12 & Up. 

The price for the Bat House Workshop is based off of the number of bat houses you would like to build. You will be prompted to enter the number of individuals building each box when registering.

To get to the Workshop, drive north on Highway 57 from The Ridges Nature Center for 1/2 a mile. Turn right onto County Rd Q and turn into the first driveway on the right. Once in the driveway, keep right to get to the Workshop and Cabins parking lot. 

*This workshop will be in an indoor space with hammering and power tools. 

Halloween Hike

Come hike the boardwalk if you dare! Special Halloween-themed stations along Hidden Brook Boardwalk will highlight creepy critters and spooky sights of The Ridges Sanctuary. If you make it to the Upper Range Light, prepare yourself for a ghostly encounter... 

Come any time between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm for a self guided tour and interact with our spooky team to learn about all things bats, carnivorous plants and more! 

This event is appropriate for families of all ages. Flashlights will be provided to you for the duration of your hike. Costumes are encouraged!

Pre-registration is not necessary but encouraged. Tickets can be purchased upon arrival during the event as well.

Lake Lessons

Join us for our Thursday night Lake Lessons!

The Ridges honors its history of accessible and impactful conservation education through Lake Lessons. These Thursday evening programs feature different topics with experts from around the Midwest about the Great Lakes and surrounding habitats. Lake Lessons are from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm at the Cook-Albert Fuller Nature Center. 

Lake Lessons are free! Preregistration is requested due to limited space.

Stewardship Workshops

Become your own land steward through our Stewardship Workshop series this summer at The Ridges! These workshops will focus on local environmental issues and what landowners can do to better manage and protect their own property. Land Manager Sam Hoffman will lead discussions and demonstrate different techniques ranging from plant identification and invasive species control, to promoting diverse wildlife habitats in your own backyard. Participants will receive take home materials to help them practice stewardship on their properties!

This year's Stewardship Workshop line up includes:

After walking the ridges and discussing some nature inspired brews, we will head over to Sway Brewing to learn about the beer making process. Program fee includes Ridges Pint Glass and Brewery pour. Must be 21 years or older to participate.

Monarch Madness

Citizen Science Symposium

Save the date for our annual Citizen Science Symposium! We will provide the opportunity for our Citizen Scientists along with the public to gather in celebration of a successful field season. With a mix of social time, amusing anecdotes, and a light breakfast, the focus of the Symposium is on the great research that our Citizen Scientists are performing. Brief reports from The Ridges Sanctuary, Crossroads at Big Creek, Climate Change Coalition of Door County and the Door County Land Trust volunteers will highlight this event. A call for presenters from our various Citizen Scientist programs will be forthcoming.
