Stewardship Workshop: Soil Health

This event is no longer on sale.

Thursday August 22

9:00 AM  –  11:30 AM

You are registering for our Stewardship Workshop Series. Each month we will focus on a new topic that will help you bring stewardship right to your back yard. We will focus on local environmental issues and what landowners can do to better steward their own property. Land Manager Sam Hoffman will lead discussions and demonstrate different techniques ranging from plant identification and invasive species control, to promoting diverse wildlife habitats in your own backyard.

This year's Stewardship Workshop line up includes:

June 20: Wetland Management: Wetlands are vital ecosystems that support high levels of biodiversity, improve water quality, and provide many benefits to society and native organisms. However, much of the original wetlands in Wisconsin have been lost or degraded. Join Ridges’ Land Manager Sam Hoffman in the field to learn what you can do to better steward our wetland habitats, and what resources are available to private landowners to help them achieve management goals.

July 25: Conserving Biodiversity: High levels of biological diversity can be an indicator of a healthy ecosystem and can be a good way of gauging the health of your natural area. Join Ridges’ Land Manager Sam Hoffman for a stewardship workshop focused on preserving biodiversity in our own natural areas. We will wander through The Ridges preserve to discuss ecological concepts behind biodiversity, compare levels between different habitats, and review resources and tools available to help private landowners implement conservation practices on their own natural areas.

August 22: Soil Health: Soil, the living world beneath our feet, is a fundamental component to healthy natural areas. Healthy soils promote nutrient cycling, store carbon, and provide the base for diverse plant communities. Join Ridges’ Land Manager Sam Hoffman for this stewardship workshop focused on how to promote healthy soils. We will wander through The Ridges preserve to look at a variety of soil types, methods for improving or maintaining soil health, and review resources and tools available to private landowners.

September 12: Climate Change Resiliency: One of the most complicated global challenges of our time is climate change, and its potential impacts on society and our natural world cannot be ignored. Join Ridges’ Land Manager Sam Hoffman for this stewardship workshop focused on climate change resiliency on our managed lands. We will review what we currently know about climate change and how it will impact natural areas, go in the field to look at examples of projects trying to inform future management efforts, and go over what resources and tools private landowners can use to implement some of these practices on their own.

Workshops meet on the above Thursdays, 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM

Fee: Public $30 | Member $25
